Earnock’s Mary Young

HAMILTON man Don Boyle has penned this poem about his close friend.

The 72-year-old said: “Mary Young and her family and my family have been good friends for more than 100 years.

“The families met when they both came to Earnock Rows early in the 20th Century.

“Mary’s husband, Joe Daley, a Cadzow man, sadly died at number of years ago.

“Mary is one of the most delightful persons one could ever hope to meet and we love to sit and talk about the Earnock Rows we knew more than 60 years ago.”

Remember those days in old Earnock rows,

More precious, more dear, each memory grows.

Remember our friends, remember their names,

Remember the laughter, remember the games.

Memories of days we knew long ago,

The faces of people that we used to know.

The sound of their laughter still coming to mind,

Memories of people so gentle and kind.

How could a place so humble and plain,

Come into mind again and again.

Were it not for the people once that we knew,

People whose hearts and love were so true.

Out of the past those memories will steal,

and in our dreams feeling so real.

Faces of friends who now are so few,

How wonderful, Mary, speaking with you.

To smile at the life once that was ours,

Sharing our memories like garlands of flowers.

And I know no song ever was sung,

Was half so sweet as Earnock’s Mary Young.
