Little Shop of Horrors delights audience

FOLLOWING their critically acclaimed production of “Wizard of Oz”, the Hamilton District Youth Theatre performed the lesser known “Little Shop of Horrors” to a packed Hamilton Town House, writes Maxwell Lynas.

The show, adapted from the 1960 movie of the same name, which starred a youthful Jack Nicholson, sees a strange and unusual plant fall into the hands of a nerdish florist named Seymour, who works with fellow shop assistant Audrey, whom he has taken a shine to, in Skid Row, New York.

Audrey's romantic interests, however, lie with Orin Scrivello, a dysfunctional dentist, who treats her badly.

The cast of the show included Daniel McAuley, who played Seymour and Mark Paterson, who played Orin Scrivello, the dentist.

When “Little Shop of Horrors” was remade in 1986 these roles were played by Rick Moranis and Steve Martin, whom you agree would be hard acts to follow but the boys performed admirably, both of whom sounded like real “New Yorkers” and wowed the crowd with their acting and singing talent.

Nicole O’ Rafferty, who played the role of Audrey, was also outstanding and the trio deserved the rapturous applause they received.

The supporting cast were exceptional and once again the Hamilton District Youth Theatre performed to a high standard that was deserving of their and the backroom staff’s commitment throughout the year.

The Hamilton District Youth Theatre will be back on stage performing a tribute to the hit TV show Glee on September 15 and 16 at Hamilton Town House.

Tickets are available from The Town House box office and on 01698 452299.

They will also be available on www.southlanarkshire.gov.uk/do-it-online.
