Plenty of attention for Boycotts’ cause

UNSIGNED band The Boycotts are hoping for big things in 2009.

Made up of David ‘Hardcore’ Dunsmore, Christina ‘Stina Twee’ Tweedle, Joe ‘Josef K’ Gillies and Graham ‘Dragon’ Young, the Boycotts were formed in April last year.

They played their first gig by the end of June and recorded their debut demo at Lofi Studios at the end of September.

The band’s drummer, Graham Young (21), and bassist David Dunsmore (21), both come from Quarter, Hamilton, while vocalist Christina and guitarist Joe hail from Edinburgh.

With prestigious gigs under their belt at King Tut’s (twice), Edinburgh’s Cabaret Voltaire, Glasgow’s Captain’s Rest, Sneaky Pete’s in Hamilton, and a third King Tut’s gig lined up in April – when they will support Orange Unsigned act the Fangs – things are certainly on the up for The Boycotts.

Graham, an ex-Strahaven Academy pupil, said: “We’ve gone from strength to strength in our first year.

“The band is into all different styles of music, but none of that really comes out in our own music.

“It sounds a wee bit like the Kings of Leon, but a lot of it sounds really different.

“There’s something about this band that just works.”

The Boycotts played to a large crowd at the Captain’s Rest on Monday night and got a great reaction from the crowd.

Graham said: “The sound on stage was a bit muffled but we had a great time.

“The crowd were awesome.”

Having received rave reviews from the Daily Record, Sunday Mail and The List, the band are now hoping their success will propel them to the stages of festivals this year, most notably the King Tut’s stage at T in the Park.

Graham said: “We’re hoping to play some festivals this year and after that we’re going to work really hard through the summer, once university finishes.”

The band are currently recording at Chem19 studios with veteran sound engineer Andy Miller and have a release planned later this year.
