Glasgow gigs could provide route to big time for Nespresco
AN Uddingston band have their sights on the big time after a successful gig at Ivory Blacks in Glasgow.
Four-piece rock group Nespresco have been playing together for nine months and used the gig to showcase some of their new material.
The band’s members are vocalist and guitarist David Campbell (18), keyboard player James Taylor (18) and drummer David Timmins (19), all from Uddingston. The fourth member, bassist Martin Gillespie (18), comes from Cambuslang.
Despite some sound problems early in the performance, David Campbell insisted that the crowd responded well.
He said: “It went well and we played new material, which got a good reception. But for the first two songs I’m afraid the sound quality was lacking. So that was a bit of a mess to say the least.
“But it picked up after that and we got a good response.
There was a good crowd there, about 70 or so.”
When they formed, Nespresco were a three-piece. David added: “We were without a bass player for a while. But my friend Martin was playing with another band and he eventually came and helped us out.”
David claims that it is Nespresco’s range of influences that help make them popular and will set them up to reach the top.
He said: “There are a lot of different influences for us, definitely a mixture. Radiohead is a definite for me personally, and Tom Waits is also a big influence, as are Mogwai.
“For some reason, we like playing jazz, but we have absolutely no idea why it happens. None of us is really into that kind of music.”
David thinks he gained his musical side and interest from his father, who played in a variety of bands when he was younger. He continued: “About six years ago, I picked up a guitar and started singing.
“I did a couple of shows at school and just got to grips with the singing itself. Everything went from there and I found it was something I was good at.
“It is something I want to have a career in, 100 per cent. If someone offered me a record deal right now I would take it, even if I was getting paid peanuts.”
David Campbell is certain that Nespresco will one day reach the top, although he admits it is still very early days for the talented young band, who are set to play two more gigs in Glasgow in the next couple of months.
