Student’s gig will benefit hospital

HAMILTON music student Katrina Rice is organising a concert as part of her college course.

And the proceeds of the gig will go to Yorkhill Childrens Hospital.

The 19-year-old HNC music student at Motherwell College will stage the gig, entitled Singing for Reasons, on March 28 in Bradleys Bar, Hillhouse.

Katrina is a second-year student who attended St Cuthberts Primary and John Ogilvie High.

She has decided to split the proceeds between the Genetic Unit and the Meningitis Intensive Care Unit at Yorkhill Hospital.

She decided to donate proceeds to both units as her older brother was stillborn due to a genetic disorder and she lost her baby cousin to meningitis.

Katrina, who lives with her family in Burnbank, has been a keen musician from early childhood and took inspiration from her dad John and grandfather Francis, who were both singers. Katrina is also a singer, taught herself guitar two years ago and is currently learning to play drums and piano.

When she completes her course next summer, Katrina would like to work with young people who are interested in music.

She counts her musical influences as Kelly Clarkson, The Veronicas and Tippy, lead singer from Glasgow band The Hedrons, who is also Katrinas college lecturer.

Katrina has worked as a volunteer youth worker for Terminal One in Blantyre and has frequented the youth facility for almost nine years, taking part in music and drama projects.

She said: It was my decision to make the graded unit part of my course a charity event.

I decided to donate to Yorkhill hospital mainly because of the outstanding work they do for sick kids.

She said her mum, Christine Larkins, had always taught her to make the most of the opportunities that come her way.
