Videogame Review: Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe

THIS IS probably the most unlikeliest of mash-ups you’ll ever see in the videogames industry..... and you know what, it works pretty damn well.

Imagine Batman vs Scorpion, the Flash vs Kitana, Raiden vs Superman and you’ve got an idea of what this game is about.

Graphicaly the game is good, not brilliant but good. The character models lack a certain wow factor for an HD, next-gen game. However they are well animated and suited to the comic book tone. Another cool feature is the real-time damage characters receive (i.e bruising, ripped costumes, cowls).

Gameplay is a bash and well suited for the casual player. Quick time events play a huge part in the fights, with close encounter bouts playing out as a button guessing game. The free fall fighting, where you and your opponent battle it out in mid-air is also very fun.

It’s extremely watered down though and nowhere near as brutal as other Mortal Kombat games. This said, some of the moves are eye catching and well thought out.

The story mode is engrossing,  very structured and well acted. Each DC character is played out well, with the Joker stealing the show most of the time.

It’s good for a pick up and play, but does nothing new for the genre and MK fans expecting the next revolutionary fighter here, should look elsewhere.

Overall, a fun, well written brawler that’ll go down as a nice Xmas treat for DC and MK fans.
