LANARKSHIRE band Annie Stevenson are just one of 48 acts competing to land a prime spot on stage at this year’s T in the Park.
The four-piece, comprising 18-year-old vocalist and guitarist Nick Scroggie from Carluke and drummer Ewan Laing (18) from Lanark as well as 19-year-old guitarist and vocalist Tom Boyd from Glasgow and bassist Steven Shevlin (21) from East Kilbride, take their place in the final 48 of the T-Break competition that will give 16 unsigned acts the chance to perform at T in the Park in July.
Acts that have played this event in the past have included Biffy Clyro, Paisley-born Paulo Nutini and fellow Scots star Amy MacDonald as well as Lanarkshire bands Yashin and Drive-By Argument.
Annie Stevenson began when Nick and Tom met on a music course at Stow College in Glasgow. They had a shared talent for songwriting and decided to put a band together as a vehicle for their songs. By October, they had added Ewan on drums and ‘Shev’ on bass. Annie Stevenson were born.
By March 2008, they played their first gig at the Clutha Vaults in Glasgow. Since then they have been gigging throughout the central Scotland.
The band, who have been described as a cross between Blur and Nirvana with a touch of The Beatles, played their showcase gig last Wednesday at Edinburgh’s Liquid Room to a crowd filled with record-industry insiders.
Nick Scroggie said: “We felt the night went well and it was a great experience.
“It’s a fantastic achievement to get this far in such a short time but we know we are up against a number of really good bands from around the country, who are all competing for those coveted places.
“Regardless of what happens, we are positive about their future and know the best is yet to come.”
Annie Stevenson have many ideas for new material and are looking to improve their act and develop their website over the next 12 months in order to reach a wider audience.
Their website has attracted more than 10,000 hits since the band formed last year, and now that they are involved with T-Break they are hoping for many more.
