Different tastes help band to bond

LANARKSHIRE rockers Sumer are hoping their different musical tastes will set them apart from other bands.

The four music students from Motherwell College have been together for two years after they enjoyed working together on group projects at college and they carried on from there.

They even admit that being part of the music course has helped them put together more catchy songs.

With four very different tastes in music, the band hope it will give them an extra edge over rivals in the industry.

Vocalist Paul McCluskey (21) from Coatbridge, explained: “In most bands every member tends to like the same style of music and therefore they usually continue to write the same material and persist with the same sound.

“Our main sound harks back to the good old days of proper rock with a good spadeful of Blues being thrown in.

“Anyone who listens to Led Zeppelin, The Doors, and Deep Purple will hear our main influences.

“However, with our drummer, George, being a fan of punk, our guitarist Martin, a fan of metal, bass guitarist Paul Giff, loving funk and me heading the influences with classic rock, blues and folk, it turns out to be a nice mix where we can delve into each other’s influences to create our unique take on the rock sound.

“The fact that we have different styles of music that come together in a neat package means we never sound like anybody else. No-one wants to hear a poor man’s Oasis.”

He added that the band sound “as if The Doors had an illegitimate child with Deep Purple who was raised by Lemmy of Motorhead.”

The band, who practice regularly at the Foundry Music Lab in Motherwell, are all studying to become sound engineers as well as musicians.
