Top flautist Fiona ready to show what she can do

TALENTED Larkhall flautist Fiona Paterson is set to perform in concert this weekend in Hamilton.

Fiona (22), who studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, will perform Carl August Nielsen’s Flute Concerto with the Marian Chamber Ensemble at a concert in St Mary’s Episcopal Church in Auchingramont Road.

The former Machanhill Primary School pupil is understandably delighted at the opportunity to perform in front of her friends and family.

“I have been studying in London for the past five years and I have always missed home,” explained Fiona. “It is great to come back and have the chance to demonstrate what I can do. It gives me the chance to thank everyone in my family for all the support they have given me over the years.”

This will not be the first time Fiona has played with the group.

In 2004, she performed Mozart’s Flute Concerto in G major accompanied by Marian.

Fiona began playing the flute at Machanhill Primary under the watchful eye of her teacher Colin Bowen.

She then attended Douglas Academy in Milngavie, which is home to one of the most prestigious music schools in the country.

After school, Fiona made the decision to move to London to follow her dream.

She graduated with first class honours from Guildhall last year after winning the prestigious woodwind prize, and is currently in her postgraduate year at the college while on trial with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

Fiona has also had the opportunity to work with the London Symphony Orchestra.

The LSO are one of the leading orchestras in the world and are regularly heard on film soundtracks.

“It’s absolutely incredible playing with them,” commented Fiona. “At Guildhall, we are given the opportunity to sit in on some of their rehearsals. You can’t imagine what it is like to play with all those talented musicians.”

In the long term, Fiona’s ambitions lie north of the border.

“I would love to freelance in London for a while, but I want to return to Scotland at some point in my career. I just want to be able to perform and enjoy my music either as a soloist or with an orchestra.”

Fiona will play with the Marian Chamber Ensemble, conducted by David Hamilton, this Saturday.

The orchestra will also perform Schubert’s Fifth Symphony.

Admission to the concert, which begins at 7.30pm, is by a donation programme.
