Open mic night proves a real hit

STRUM, an open mic night recently launched in Uddingston, is set to establish itself as the premier Lanarkshire event for budding KT Tunstalls and Paulo Nutinis.

Siobhan Edwards, director and licensee of Angels Hotel, decided to launch STRUM six weeks ago.

She said: “I undertook some market research to understand what was happening around Lanarkshire on Thursday nights, a night when many people choose to go out.

“I found that while there were some opportunities for karaoke nights and the occasional tribute band, there was nothing really for singers and songwriters who wanted to show what they can do in a professional environment.

“The feedback we have had so far has been fantastic, with people telling us it’s a really good concept. While there are other open mic nights which give people the opportunity to sing, I think the difference is the investment we have put into STRUM.

“A sound engineer is on hand at all times, while a PA is there for singers and acoustic guitarists.

“Literally anyone can come in off the street and sing or strum their guitar to a friendly crowd. You never know who may be listening.”

When it comes to attracting interest, Angels know what they are doing.

The Main Street hotel won the Best Marketing Initiative in 2006 at the DRAM awards for its innovative coverage of the World Cup. The DRAMs are the industry accolades for those working in the licensed trades in Scotland.

The hotel also received local recognition by hosting an alternative weekend to T in the Park, complete with marquees and wristbands.

Angels is a family-run business owned by ex-Celtic player Harry Hood.

STRUM has already attracted talent scouts from both L107 and Radio Clyde.

The evening, held every Thursday, is hosted by talented vocalist Mark Trainer.

On January 10 next year, the STAR STRUM competition will be launched.

Running for six weeks, the contest aims to discover the best singer and the best acoustic musician in Lanarkshire.

Each winner will pick up £500 in cash and eight hours’ studio time in the Old Mill Studios, Strathaven. The studio has recently been used by a variety of local bands, including Sooth and Genaro.
