Equi’s scoop top ice cream prize

EQUI’S ice cream shop in Hamilton this week won Britain’s top prize for the best ice cream at the UK ICA National Ice Cream Championship competition in Harrogate.

Premium dairy ice cream has been Equi's speciality since 1922. The company produce a wide range of flavoured ice cream.

The top five bestsellers are double cream vanilla, wild strawberry, Sophie's crunch, dime bar crunch and mint choc chip.

General manager David Equi said: "This is a great honour for my staff in Hamilton, where our goal has always been to be the best.

“We have won two gold medals, one for our strawberry and the other for a new flavour, kiwi.

“We also won two silver medals this year for vanilla and another new speciality flavour, which was rhubarb.

The top six class winners are pitted against each other and the judges choose the competition’s overall winner - Champion of Champions. David and his ice cream team won this too.

“The ice cream is judged blind by the country’s top ice cream experts, and this is the best result we have ever had in terms of overall medals, but to be recognised as the overall champion like this for the whole of the UK is beyond my wildest dreams", said David.

Equi’s ice cream parlour is named after David’s late grandfather Peter, who died in 1981.

The business was then run by David’s late father Robert, who died in 1995.

The shop is now run by David, and his 16-year-old daughter Sophie.

David added: “It is particularly poignant that we have won Champion of Champions for the second time in three years.

“Nobody else has ever done this. It’s probably the best medal haul by any manufacturer in the history of the competition.
