A PROFESSIONAL Quarter horse trainer has made a successful jump into the world of writing.
For Morag Higgins released her first book this month entitled ‘Bruja’ which has quickly sold-out.
The 43-year-old, who owns the Ross Dhu Equestrian Centre, in Quarter, has written about her life and her friendship with a horse called Bruja.
Morag, who has been riding for 30 years, explained: “The book is based on my life with my first horse. It is about me growing up and follows the journey and adventures we had together.”
When Bruja died, Morag was devastated and she decided that she would write down about the times she spent with the horse.
Morag had no intention of writing a book, and merely wanted a record of Bruja’s life.
She said: “I had owned Bruja for 20 years and wanted to capture my memories so that I could look back on them for years to come.
“When I started writing it took me a maximum of about a week and I really enjoyed remembering all the things Bruja and I did together.”
Morag had let a friend read her notes and they advised her to contact a publishing company.
Morag was very sceptical about the idea, but Fisher King Publishing contacted her to say they were interested in the book.
The first batch of books printed sold out within a week.
Morag tells the story of how she grew up in the East End of Glasgow in a housing scheme.
She tells of her wish to become a horse trainer, but living in the city it wasn’t going to be easy.
Morag, who has taught riding for almost three decades, added: “I owe everything to my parents who got me Bruja.
“My parent’s couldn’t really afford a horse but they believed in me.
“I firmly believe if you really want to do something you can make it happen.”
Morag has worked with many horses throughout her career, having participated in several disciplines such as jumping, dressage, one day eventing, showing and western riding.
“The book appeals to a wide range of people of all ages. It’s certainly not just for those who love horses.
“People have told me the book has left them laughing and crying, and anyone who has ever had a pet can relate to the story,” she added.
The book is published by Fisher King Publishing and is available on-line from www.fisherkingpublishing.co.uk.
