King's gets a £400K boost

THE King’s Theatre in Glasgow has been awarded £395,580 by Glasgow City Council towards phase one of the restoration of one the country’s most historic and best-loved theatres.

A recommendation will be made that a further award be made in 2009/10 and again in 2010/11 subject to further discussion and review.

After hearing about the award Richard Wingate, chief executive of Glasgow Theatres Ltd, part of the Ambassador Theatre Group, said: “We are delighted that the King's Theatre has been awarded this substantial amount from Glasgow City Council.

“This is a significant contribution to the proposed £7.2million required to carry out the ambitious programme of restoration ahead of us. It also highlights the theatre's historical and cultural importance to Glasgow and the people of the city.”

Built in 1904 this grade-A listed building, owned by Glasgow City Council, has been a foundation stone in the social life of the people of Glasgow for over 100 years, and discussions are underway with Historic Scotland to ensure the theatre is restored to its former grandeur.

The King’s Theatre has already embarked on its own fundraising efforts, with over £50,000 having been generated by the contribution of £1 from every King’s ticket sold.
