Blantyre Miners’ ABC youngsters are doing well.

YOUNG boxers Ross Greig and Robbie Mullens are pictured with their proud coaches after winning titles at the West of Scotland Championships.

Ross took his title in the 38k division for boxers born in 1999, while Robbie won the 50k 1996 birth category at the Pivot Centre, Moodiesburn.

Ross (14) and Robbie (12) are just two of the local lads doing well at Blantyre Miners’ Amateur Boxing Club under the tutelage of coaches John McDermott, Tommy Slaven and Tommy Campbell, who train an average of 40 boys, three days a week.

Some of the boxers who have trained at the gym, started by John McDermott some 40 years ago, include world champ Pat Clinton and Commonwealth super-featherweight champion Craig Docherty.

Coach Tommy Slaven (44) hopes that Ross and Robbie will follow in their footsteps.

He said: “Ross and Robbie are doing very well, but particularly Robbie, who was fighting his first fight at that level, and on his birthday too.

“Ross is also coming on really strong and has a fight record of five wins from seven, which is a good ratio.”
