Bothwell badminton star scoops top sporting award

BOTHWELL badminton ace Kirsty Gilmour received the perfect boost ahead of her Uber Cup debut by scooping a top award.

Kirsty (16), made her senior Scotland debut in Poland, hoping to help the nation qualify for the prestigious competition proper.

And her confidence will have been boosted after being named Young Sportsperson of the Year at the Glasgow Sports Person of the Year Awards at Glasgow’s Tramway Theatre.

The award is fitting reward for Kirsty’s stunning start to the 2009-10 season.

In August she won the Women’s Singles title at the prestigious Langenfeld Trophy in Germany, and within weeks added the UK School Games title to her collection.

She topped that off by retaining her Singles title at the Bank of Scotland under-19 National Championships, having won in previous years at under-13, 15 and 17 level.

On Monday Glasgow School of Sport pupil Kirsty flew to Warsaw with the Scotland squad for the Uber Cup European qualifying round.

• Motherwell’s Craig Morrison helped a Scotland Select team overcome British Police 8-3 at the Cockburn Centre, Glasgow, on Friday.

Craig and Kinross partner Patrick MacHugh beat Paul Hume and Brian Lockie 21-19 21-10.
