Lanarkshire wheelchair curlers qualify for Paralympic Games

TWO of Lanarkshire’s top wheelchair curlers this week spoke of their delight after qualifying for the 2010 Paralympic Games.

Strathaven’s Aileen Neilson and Jim Sellar from Bellshill are part of Great Britain’s squad for the Games in Vancouver, Canada, from March 12-21.

Neither are strangers to high-level competition, but both insist their selection is a dream come true.

Aileen (38), said: “I’m absolutely delighted. Attending the Paralympics is something that I have dreamed of, it’s a goal, and a pinnacle for me.

“I’ve won Scottish, British and Pairs Championships and represented Scotland at the last three World Championships, but the Paralympics only take place every four years, so this is very special.”

Aileen, a teacher at Hamilton’s Bent Primary School, would like to thank the school for their support, and also sportscotland, West of Scotland Institute of Sport and to British Curling for their support.

Jim (53), commented: “I’m over the moon. I’ve been to five World Championships but never the Paralympics.

“I missed out four years ago and I hope this year I can come back with a medal.

“This is a long-term ambition and is the result of a lot of training and hard work.

“If I get into the top four I’ll be happy, and anything on top of that is a bonus.”
