Hamilton golfer Pamela selected for Curtis Cup squad

HAMILTON golfer Pamela Pretswell admits she has been given an amazing opportunity after being selected for the Great Britain and Ireland squad for the 2010 Curtis Cup.

The Ladies’ Professional Golf Union will whittle the squad down to eight when the team is announced in April for the biannual match, which will be played at Essex Golf Club, Massachusetts, in June 2010.

Bothwell Castle Golf Club player Pamela impressed selectors with performances for GB&I against Europe in the Vagliano Trophy in Germany in July, and by winning the Taunton Trophy at the British Ladies’ Open Amateur Championships in Sweden earlier this month.

Pamela (20), a Business Management student at Glasgow University, said: “When I heard about being called up I was really pleased. I’ve had a good season so far and I was hoping to get in, but it was a nice surprise.

“This is what I’ve been working for in the last couple of years and I’m really happy.

“This is an opportunity, the sort of chance that doesn’t come around often. I’ve got a few tournaments and I’m hoping to get in some good performances and take it from there.

“This is a massive step in my career. I started golfing about six years ago and it’s been hard fitting it in around university, but this is what it’s been for.”

Pamela’s dad William said: “Between now and next April Pamela will be trying to keep her game in shape as well as completing her third year of Business Management studies at Glasgow University.

“Pamela hopes that her university schedule will allow her to play in some tournaments in the United States and Europe in early 2010, as part of her preparations and to show the Curtis Cup selectors that she has carried her excellent form into the new season.”

The Curtis Cup is played over three days in June 2010, and is similar in format to the Ryder Cup men’s event for European and American professional golfers.
