Kids given lessons in golf

CHILDREN from Uddingston Grammar’s resource centre for visually impaired pupils were last week given lessons in golf at Hamilton Driving Range, thanks to South Lanarkshire Disability Sport and Scottish international blind golfer Mike Mayo.

Professional Euan Reid took the kids through their paces after Dominic Everett and Alison Darroch from Uddingston Grammar linked up with Scott Dunbar at SLDS to arrange the trip.

It proved successful, and Scottish Blind Society representative Mike hopes some of them take up the sport.

He said: “The aim was to show the kids that they can achieve many things, including golf, while living with a disability such as blindness.

“I am living proof that you can enjoy sports and become very successful.

“South Lanarkshire Disability Sport have been superb in supporting disabilities in the area, and it is thanks to Scott Dunbar for arranging the funding to give the kids a bit of fun.

“I would also like to thank Euan Reid, who has been great with the kids, and they have all come back with positivity, which is what it is all about. Thanks also to Strathclyde Park Golf Centre.

“Dominic and Alison at Uddingston Grammar do a great job looking after the kids, who have loved going to the range and hitting a few balls.

“Who knows – we might have a couple of future blind golfers in our ranks.”

Mike, a player at Hollandbush Golf Club, also appealed for businesses to get involved to help the kids enjoy more outings.

He said: “Funding to get the kids out and about is always hard to come by, so if there are any companies out there who would like to donate some funding, or anyone would like to donate golf clubs for the kids, please get in touch with me.

“Your help would be much appreciated, and when you see the smile on the kids’ faces you know it’s worth it.”

Anyone willing to help can contact Mike on 01555 893253.
