SEVERAL members of Strathclyde Park Rowing Club achieved phenomenal success at the 2008 Scottish Rowing Championships last weekend, winning 16 events across all age groups on their ‘home’ patch.
Top performances were recorded by the men’s four crew of Fraser Quinn, Andrew Barton, Joseph Barton and Daniel Shankland, who retained their title for the second year.
The junior 18 women’s team of Janey Campbell, Natalie Irvine, Rosie Young, Carla Santoni, Sarah Arnold, Ruth Cranston, Fiona O’Prey and Hazel Gaddis achieved a clean sweep in all their events, including the WJu18 coxed 8.
Sarah McNee and Rachel Arnold added to that haul as part of the WJ16 quad.
Graham Ord and Peter Byrne were worthy winners of the OJu13 double scull championship, whilst Gillian Connal scooped the WInt single scull championship, winning by over two boat-lengths, and she repeated that success in the WInt double scull with crew-mate Mairi Struthers.
Success continued for the club with women’s vents Karen Barton, Ailie Ord, Maureen McGarvey and Liz Davidson winning the WVet quadruple scull, while Ailie achieved further success in the WVet single scull, and Maureen in the W4x.
Club President and coach Peter Barton was pleased with their success over June 14-15, and said: “This has been a tremendous weekend of racing for the club.
“The men’s four produced an astonishingly mature performance, leading the race from the start and never letting go.
“This was particularly pleasing, given the interruptions to their training schedule due to university exams.
“The junior women crews continue to impress by achieving a clean sweep of all rowing events in the J18 category, and significant successes in the J16 events, with Rosie Young winning in five J18 events, Janey Campbell winning four J18 events, and Natalie Irvine achieving success in seven events across J16 novice crews, who at their first Scottish Championships displayed real passion and determination.”
