WHETHER it’s a sport on land or in the water, Lanark teenager Ross McCafferty is proving to be just champion.
The 15-year-old, who is already a swimming champion, is now proving to be the young person to beat on the golf course.
A member of Lanark Amateur Swimming Club, Ross trains most days with head coach Karen Kelly, who has been the major driving force in Ross’s success.
Last month he won the Scottish Championship 200-metre butterfly in a time of 2:21.45 at Tollcross Leisure Centre.
Just a week before, he won the West District Championship in the 100-metre butterfly and 200-metre butterfly at Cumbernauld.
Last weekend, Ross competed in the Manchester Open Meet, against English swimmers, with the South Lanarkshire Swim Team.
Ross had an excellent outing at Manchester, breaking seven Lanark Amateur Swimming Club records, and returning with a silver medal for the 50-metre backstroke; and two bronze medals, for the 100-metre backstroke and 50-metre butterfly.
Ross is also a junior member of Lanark Golf Club.
His most recent success was beating more than 70 competitors to win last month’s ‘The Boys’ Spring Meeting at Carnwath Golf Club.
This summer, Ross is looking forward to taking part in the 2008 Swedish Golf Exchange in Karlskrona, Sweden, as part of the Clydesdale Junior Golf Team.
Looking to the future, Ross, not unsurprisingly, hopes to pursue a career in sport.
