YOUNG speedway starlet Dale Lamb is well on track in his sport – at the tender age of only 14.
Mum Margaret jokes that the Libberton teenager can barely hold his bike upright, but even she has been amazed by his progress.
In November Dale was Scottish Auto Cycle Union (SACU) Under-16 Rider of the Year at Dunfermline, and finished fourth overall in the British Under-15 Championship.
The Biggar High pupil has also been named Under-500cc Rider of the Year at Workington’s northside training track for two consecutive years, and took the Riders’ Rider of the Year award at the same venue in February.
Mum-of-four Margaret (46), reckons that with older son Mark (20) stationed in Iraq, she has a family of thrill-seekers.
She said: “Dale is doing really well at speedway — in fact he’s doing too well, as far as I’m concerned.
“My heart practically stops beating, but he’s really good at it and I suppose as a mother it wouldn’t really matter what he did.
“I’ve got one in Iraq and another haring round a speedway track!”
Margaret added: “He’s been doing it for just over two years, and is Edinburgh Monarchs’ mascot, while he also goes out in the second half at Glasgow.
“Dale trains at Workington and they sometimes hold a mini meeting for Youth 500 and amateurs.
“Recently he was up against two of Bellview Colts’ best riders and finished second, so I was really proud of him.
“He’s only six stone and the height of nothing, so people don’t think he can ride, but he’s brilliant at it.
“He got his 500cc licence in November, and riders normally need to wait until April or May, but he had two referees and three trainers backing him at the British Speedway Promoters’ Association (BSPA).
“He wants to ride at under-15 level all over the country but wants a junior team to ride for just now.
“Glasgow Giants, Workington Stars and Bellview Colts have all shown an interest in him.”
Margaret would like to thank Dale’s sponsors, Townhead Cafe, Biggar; Alhambra Cafe, Bellshill; Clydesdale Plants, Symington; Barry’s Barber, Biggar; Campsie’s Garage, Biggar; Inverarity, Symington; Woodhead School of Motoring, Glasgow, ESP Powder Coating, Glasgow; Mike Hunter; Big James, Mark and Sargrey; Gordon’s Multi-Repair, Lanark; JJ Sportswear, Glasgow; and Tinto Sand and Gravel.
