TALENTED Steven Prentice has won the Winter Series Honda Cadet Championships at the prestigious West of Scotland Kart Club at the age of just eight.
On Sunday, February 3 the Chatelherault Primary School pupil finished first in both heats and beat second-placed Elliot Patterson by just 0.4 of a second in what was a nail-biting final.
He now qualifies for the Scottish Series, which will see him travel to three different tracks across Scotland for a six-round competition.
Steven, of Silvertonhill in Hamilton, only started competing in the Honda Cadet series in July of last year, after passing his Association of Racing Kart School (ARKS) test, and finished third overall that season.
Mum Amanda Clark said: “We’re extremely proud, and had no idea that Steven would be as good as he was.
“I didn’t think he would win because he was up against much more experienced lads, but even though he spun on the last corner he still won it.
“He’s been fantastic all of the season and that basically sets him up for the rest of the year.
“He will now take part in the Scottish Super Series, which sees him travel across the country over six rounds — it’ll be expensive, but exciting.”
Lewis got involved through his dad, Andrew, and Amanda is concerned that daughter Rachel (3), is next in line!
She said: Steven’s wee sister Rachel — who’s three — is already interested in getting involved and goes around everywhere wearing a tiny little crash-helmet.
“My heart’s in my mouth every time Steven goes out, so I hope she sticks to dancing!”
Although Steven has been fortunate enough to secure sponsorship through local company Xtreme Cleaning, Amanda and Andrew are looking for as much help as they can get, as their son’s fledgling career develops.
