THORNIEWOOD United got new boss Kieran McGuinness off to a great start when they hit Highlanders Newmachar 5-1 in Saturday’s Emirates Scottish Cup second round tie.
And United were one of seven county clubs who hit 20 goals between them to clinch their places in the third round.
Stephen Mullen proved his scoring prowess as he fired United into a two-goal lead.
Stephen Maguire latched onto Stewart Livingstone’s defence-splitting pass to lash home a third, but limped off shortly afterwards with a tight hamstring.
But substitute Chris Faulds made an immediate impact as he volleyed in a fourth, with Livingstone adding a fifth.
Manager McGuinness said: “It was a great result, especially with the injuries we were carrying, but I was delighted with the way Neil Newman, Chris Queen and Chris Faulds played on their return to the side.”
Larkhall Thistle swept past Muirkirk to record a 4-1 win – a result that manager Duncan Sinclair felt flattered his side.
He said: “We looked lethargic on the heavy pitch in the first half but in the second period we showed a lot of resilience and determination which paid off.”
John Paul Grant netted a Mark McKeever cross in 36 minutes and Graham Gracie notched a second shortly after coming on as a sub on the hour-mark.
Muirkirk pulled a goal back 11 minutes from time but in the closing minutes Jamie Dunbar raced through to net and Gracie proved the cross for Martin Canning to round off the scoring.
Lanark United recorded a comfortable 2-0 win over Vale of Leven.
Grant Cuthill opened the scoring in 31 minutes with a diving header from a Gary Gow cross, then Ross McClymont – on loan from Annan Athletic – kept United in front with a terrific diving save.
Chris McDougall turned Lanark’s second-half superiority into a two-goal lead in 67 minutes, following good play by Jack Marriott.
Vale then lost their discipline as goalkeeper Alan Gourlay was red carded for remarks made to the referee, and he was quickly followed by Mark Bowie and Andy Bonner.
Carluke Rovers edged home 3-2 winners over Vale of Clyde, with Darren Hamilton notching his second successive double in a game that saw two Vale players sent off for crude second-half tackles.
Vale seized on a defensive mix-up to take the lead, but Craig Stark’s header across goal was well tucked away by Hamilton for the equaliser.
Vale regained their lead within a minute, but Mark Haddow threaded the ball through for Hamilton to equalise again.
Midfield ace Mark Weir scored a spectacular third to clinch the match, sending a long-range free-kick into the top corner.
Manager Colin Slater said: “It was a scrappy game – Vale are a hard team to beat, but we’re just pleased to get through to the third round.”
Colin Boylan hit a double as Blantyre Vics beat East Central League side Jeanfield Swifts 2-1.
Steve Watson set up the opener in 15 minutes, but Swifts levelled and were holding out for a replay until Boylan struck again in the dying minutes to clinch victory.
Manager Alan Shields said: “It was a classic West versus East no-holds-barred Scottish Cup tie, but we produced a sound workmanlike performance which saw us into the third round.
“I thought we just edged it in a fairly even first half, but we showed grit and determination to put the disappointment of last week’s defeat well and truly behind us.”
Shotts Bon Accord shrugged off a near four-hour journey and cruised to a 2-0 win over Aberdeenshire side Maud at Pleasure Park.
Manager Tony McInally said: “The players did really well, produced some excellent football and, having hit the post once and the bar three times, we should have won far more convincingly than we did.”
The opening goal came from a good passing movement before Mark Sideserf guided a Gary McStay cross into the net.
New signing Ryan Sullivan from St Johnstone was about to shoot when he was upended in the box 15 minutes from time, and Craig Miles converted the penalty.
Stonehouse Violet clocked up a good 2-1 win over Ayrshire District League side Lugar Boswell Thistle.
Dougie Adair pounced on a Steve Rennie through-ball to nip between the centre backs and score.
Greg Cavanagh then crossed for Smart Osadolor to net with a back-post header for Violet’s second, before Adair missed a chance to stretch that lead from the spot.
Manager John Doyle said: “I thought we had the better chances in the first half, but Lugar got a boost when Dougie missed a penalty and they put us under pressure for a spell – but we held out for the victory.”
