SATURDAY is the day that has been marked in every Junior manager’s diary since pre-season started – as the league programme kicks off.
Clubs have different aspirations, targets and expectations, and while cup ties add a touch of excitement, it’s the league that shapes futures.
As clubs get down to business in the Stagecoach Super League, Lanark United will be aiming to at least retain their Super Premier status.
Bellshill Athletic will strive to ultimately recapture a top-table place following relegation.
And Shotts chase back-to-back promotions as they bid to regain Premier status.
Lanark assistant boss John Gibson said: “This is the big one, the game we’ve all been working towards, Auchinleck Talbot at Moor Park and the kick-off to the Super Premier League.
“We have bids in for a couple of experienced players. Grant Cuthill, Davie McGuire and Davie Gray are all carrying injuries. They were ruled out for midweek and could be doubtful against Auchinleck.”
Meanwhile United have signed midfielder Alan McCrum from Jerviston Boys’ Club, who netted in the 4-1 win at Larkhall.
Bellshill were dealt a blow when new signing Greg Kavanagh – who notched a hat-trick in the 4-1 win at Shettleston – took a thigh knock on Saturday, making him doubtful for the visit to Ashfield.
Manager Danny Drew said: “We beat Ashfield in the pre-season tournament at Dunipace so that gives us a psychological advantage over them.
“We’re ready for the off – David ‘Bonner’ McKenzie and Ryan Connelly have returned from holiday, while Brendan Crozier is back from injury.
“I’m also hoping to sign trialist Euan Hall, son of the former St Johnstone player Henry.”
Shotts, who have been playing some entertaining flowing football while racking up more than 30 goals in pre-season and Sectional League Cup ties, open their Super First Division challenge at Whitletts Victoria.
Manager Tony McInally said: “I’ve been very impressed with the hunger and appetite of the players.
“Some of them, who have played in the Super League structure, feel they have a point to prove.
“Others who haven’t played there are keen to get experience of it.”
Paul Finnegan (ankle) and Paul McLaughlin (knee) are doubtful.
