Goodwin missed chance to guarantee Super Premier League football for Lanark

JOHN Goodwin was left dejected after missing the chance to snatch a late winner that would have guaranteed Lanark United Super Premier League status next season.

United now face a play-off against Clydebank to stay in the division.

Former Shotts midfielder Goodwin had already got on the score-sheet when he hammered in a Tom Hanlon cross to deservedly level on the stroke of half-time.

Goodwin’s strike boosted Lanark’s prospects for the second half and strong late pressure had Meadow rocking.

The crunch came two minutes from time when Davie McGuire set up a clear chance for Goodwin, who had only the keeper to beat, but elected to side-foot the ball when a full-blooded drive was required – which allowed the keeper to recover.

Lanark will now play Clydebank, who finished third in the Super League First Division, on a home-and-away basis to decide who will play in the Super Premier League.

Dates have still to be arranged as Bankies wrapped up their league card with games at Dalry on Monday and at home to Glencairn last night (Wednesday).
