BLANTYRE Vics took advantage of their rivals’ cup involvement to push up the Central League First Division table with a 2-0 win over third-placed St Anthony’s.
Vics have pulled away from the relegation zone and have set their sights on climbing higher.
Manager Willie Harvey said: “We played well, worked really hard and deserved our win, which lifted us three places clear of the relegation zone.”
New goalkeeper Charlie Sanugonga – nicknamed ‘Chas’ by the squad – enjoyed a competent debut, pulling off a point-blank save after only 10 minutes, deflecting the ball over. ‘Chas’ produced another superb instinctive save right after the break as the Ants – trailing 1-0 at the break – put Vics under pressure.
Captain Brian Glancy and Ryan McAloon had combined to set up the opener for James Cochrane to head in after 20 minutes.
And, after Cochrane missed a chance to double the lead, Vics clinched the points on the hour-mark when a Gary Espener drive cannoned off the keeper’s chest and Glancy was poised to turn the ball into the net.
Midfielders Andy Dorrans (flu), Kevin Reilly (attending a wedding) and Mike Docherty (ankle injury) all missed the game but the first two are expected to be back for Saturday’s derby clash at home to Larkhall.
The club, meanwhile, are looking to recruit new members to their committee. Applicants should contact match secretary Andy McDade on 01698 323790 or 07930 128702.
Lesmahagow face fourth-top Vale of Leven. Barry Murdoch looks like being out for longer than first anticipated and Lee Black is a fitness doubt, but defender Matthew Aymard looks set to return.
Thorniewood United will bid to make it three in a row when St Anthony’s visit Robertson Park.
