TWO Motherwell starlets recently proved that they’re as sharp off the field as they are on it, after gaining qualifications from Motherwell College.
Teenagers Mark Archdeacon (left) and Ryan Wilson were released from training for one day every week for two years as they gained Modern Apprentices certificates in Achieving Excellence in Sports Performance.
They received their certificates during a ceremony at Fir Park on September 24.
The partnership was established eight years ago, and since then players such as Paul Quinn and Mark Reynolds have been put through the course, which involves learning about performance, health and safety and sports skills.
The two-year course is funded by the Scottish Government’s Skills Development Scotland programme, and offers players an alternative career after they hang up their boots.
Gordon Young, head of youth development at Motherwell FC, said: “I would like to congratulate the boys on completing the Modern Apprenticeship qualification. It requires a great deal of dedication, discipline and hard work to combine playing full-time football with further education.”
Motherwell College principal Hugh Logan commented: “Not everyone makes a long-term career out of playing football so the qualification gives the participants a sound base for any future career.
“I also congratulate Motherwell FC on their foresight and their continued support for these talented young players both on and off the pitch.”
