GOALKEEPER Russell Shaw’s season shuddered to a halt before it even started – after a simple training incident saw his knee give way and put him back on crutches.
The 18-year-old spent the final four months of last season on crutches with a knee injury, after he had won the Carluke jersey from veteran Peter Macfarlane.
But as Rovers kicked off their pre-season training on Saturday, Russell stumbled and was taken to hospital.
“We were playing in a bounce game,” he said. “I played a one-touch pass and as I planted my weight on my left foot, my leg just seemed to give way.
“I have to go back to hospital on Friday so the doctors can get a proper look after the swelling has gone down, and see what it’s like.
“The swelling wasn’t as severe as it was the first time, and it wasn’t as painful, so I’m hoping it won’t be as badly injured this time.”
That wasn’t the only bad news for Shaw, who on Thursday was told he had lost his job now that his firm had completed work on a construction site.
With a wry smile he added: “I’m now looking for a new job, but it doesn’t help when you go for an interview on crutches.”
