Newmains united in bid to rejoin Central League

NEWMAINS United are poised to make a comeback to the Junior ranks next season.

The club asked for relief of fixtures last summer when it looked as though they may be forced to fold just one season after taking over the mantle of the disbanded Coltness United.

But James Devine, who was a hard-working, enthusiast club president in the Coltness backroom team, is optimistic that Newmains United Community Club will take part in the Stagecoach Central League, Second Division come August.

He has appointed as the new manager former winger Ian Rankin, who had spells with Airdrieonians and Albion Rovers and in the Junior ranks with Blantyre Vics, Kilsyth Rangers, Cumbernauld, Lanark United and Forth Wanderers.

The 29-year manager said: “We’re working hard on putting together plans for the close season while the committee are working hard on securing sponsorship — a key priority.

“I didn’t want to see another club going to the wall, and I’m grateful for James Devine giving me this opportunity to get into management.

“Once we get off the ground, we’ll look forward to getting more involved with the community.

“My priority is get a backroom staff in place as soon as possible, then set to work on getting a team to fulfil fixtures during the upcoming season. I’ve no doubt that will happen.”

Rankin has invited players interested in playing for Newmains next season to come along to pre-season when it kicks off at Victoria Park on Monday, June 16, or call him on 01698 294274 or 07912 076 468.
