Thorniewood United's title hope crushed

PROMOTED Thorniewood United’s hopes of stepping up as Central League Second Division champions ended on Saturday as Wishaw were crushed 7-0 by Vale of Leven.

A Wishaw win would have clinched the title for United but that notion lasted barely a few minutes as the visitors stampeded towards the league flag.

Disappointed Wishaw boss Alex Young said: “We were left to put out a makeshift side with six regulars missing. It was a typical end-of-season performance.”

Stonehouse Violet clocked up a 2-0 win away to Greenock with goals from Zander McMillan and Jim Moore.

Boss John Clifford said: “We did well to bounce back after the 7-0 disaster the week before.

“We were 2-0 up at the interval and in the second half it was one-way traffic so we were just happy to play out the game without getting any injuries, with a Central League Cup coming up.”
