Skelton admits Hamilton are desperate for a break in front of goal

FRUSTRATED Gavin Skelton insists Accies are due a break in front of goal.

The Carlisle-born midfielder reckons Hamilton did enough to win Saturday’s New Douglas Park clash against St Mirren, but just couldn’t get the ball in the net.

Skelton hopes that luck changes when Accies face St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park.

Following Saturday’s stalemate, the former Kilmarnock and Gretna star said: “It’s frustrating. I thought we started the game well, dominated for long spells and it was the type of game that if you’re going well, you win 1-0 or 2-0.

“But if you’re struggling it just doesn’t seem to break for you at all.

“We just need that lucky break, a lucky bounce or something – if we could get a fortunate 1-0 win, it could make all the difference.

“As it was, St Mirren nearly stole the points. To be fair, the longer it was 0-0, you knew they were going to get a chance, but fair play to the lads at the back – they’ve had a bit of criticism lately but I thought they were different class.

“My heart was in my mouth when Simon Mensing put through his own goal but I thought he (Gareth Wardlaw) was interfering with play, so he was offside.”

Skelton (29) admits he loves feeling part of things at Accies again, having enjoyed a two-game run in the team after having sat out the previous seven.

He said: “I’m delighted to be back in the team and it’s nice to get back out there.”

“I know it sounds corny but it’s a different feeling when you wake up on a Saturday morning and know you’re involved. You get that feeling and it’s nice because you feel part of it rather than just turning up.”

Skelton also hopes that the focus returns to the football on the pitch after weeks of debate about referees.

He said: “Saturday’s game was really important for ourselves and St Mirren but it got overshadowed by what happened in the last few weeks.

“I think it’s sad that it got to the point of a strike. I can see where they were coming from but I don’t know how a strike really helps and I think it puts them under more pressure.

“But I don’t really want to get involved because I’m bored of it, to be honest.”
