DALZIEL waltzed into the second round of the Scottish Hydro Shield on Saturday with a resounding 32-10 win over Edinburgh University maintaining the Motherwell side’s remarkable 100 per cent record.
Dalziel enjoyed most of the early possession but several handling offences created openings for the students, who would have scored but for excellent defending by Crawford Reid and Kris Watters.
Dalziel improved and after 15 minutes a good forward drive saw ball passed to John Harris, who had a clean run to score under the posts, with Robert Simpson converting.
Simpson’s penalty stretched Dalziel’s lead to 10-0 before Edinburgh responded with a penalty of their own through Andy Bryans but Dalziel stretched their lead when a blind-side move ended when Simpson ghosted in to touch down, for a 15-3 lead.
In 60 minutes Dalziel took a scrum against the head and from turnover ball Ross McAulay scored for a 20-3 lead.
Dalziel continued to dominate and scores by Simpson and Simmonds, with a Simpson conversion, took the final score to 32-10, after the students scored a consolation try through Ian McGhee, converted by Bryans.
