BIGGAR Rugby Club grabbed a much-needed 11-3 win in Saturday’s re-arranged Scottish Hydro Premier 2 fixture against Peebles.
With both sides locked on 40 points before the game there was little doubt that this would be a tense fixture, and so it proved.
Chris McKeand pulled a penalty wide before making amends with a second award after David Harvey was sin-binned.
Donald Anderson pulled a penalty wide as Peebles tried to get into the game, and their cause wasn’t helped when Adam Clark was sin-binned for retaliating after the whistle.
Biggar were then reduced to 14 when Simeon James was judged to have illegally used his feet.
Anderson was given another penalty attempt and this time slotted for 6-3.
A missed Biggar penalty preceded a good passage of play for the hosts, as Scott Cameron, Kevin Anderson, Conor Lavery and Sam Muir combined to make good progress.
A run by Chris McKeand saw him find James, he fed ball wide to Scott Watson who rounded the Peebles defence for a great score. McKeand was unable to convert but Biggar led 11-3.
Although it wasn’t an overly physical game the sin-bin count was 2-2 with Fraley Hopa falling foul of the referee, but Anderson was again wide with his penalty attemp much to the relief of the home side.
Although both sides had chances, the scoreboard wasn’t troubled and Biggar celebrated a welcome win.
Biggar now have six games remaining to rescue their season starting against Kelso this weekend, Gala (March 6), Kirkcaldy (March 20), Stirling County (March 27), and away to Aberdeen (February 20), and Haddington (February 27).
