Dalziel Rugby Club annihilate Preston Lodge with 121- 0 win

DALZIEL roared into the Scottish Hydro Shield first round with an enormous 19-try victory over Preston Lodge at Rope Walk.

Scottish Rugby this week confirmed that the score is a record, certainly in the current format of the competition. Although conditions in Prestonpans were dreadful, Dalziel played an excellent game and featured five under-18 players in the side, including hooker Euan Stewart.

Dalziel’s fans were there in numbers and will remember this performance for years to come.

Within five minutes the ball was stolen by George Sloan, who passed to Vic Czarnocki and the winger sprinted against the elements to score in the corner.

After 18 minutes good interpassing released Czarnocki for his second try, and 12 minutes later a break by Blake Whitehead resulted in Crawford Reid putting John Harris over for a score and a 15-0 lead.

The next 10 minutes produced four more tries as Czarnocki completed his hat-trick, while Harris, Reid and Craig Simmonds helped themselves to scores, taking Dalziel to a 43-0 interval lead, as Robert Simpson converted these four.

With the elements now in their favour Dalziel continued with their running rugby gameplan, and maintained their domination.

On the few occasions that Preston seized possession they were met with some ferocious tackling, led by man of the match George Sloan.

Czarnocki helped himself to a fourth try while Whitehead, Lee McWhinnie, Stephen Baird, Ross McAulay, Sloan, Steven Findlay and a fabulous solo score from Kris Watters, with another nine conversions from Simpson, completed the rout.
