BIGGAR Rugby Club sent two teams down to Wigton at the weekend for some much-needed pre-season practice.
Michael McKeand (two tries, three conversions), Scott Watson (two tries) and Sam Muir (two tries) were scorers in the 1st XV game, as Biggar ran out 39-0 winners.
Debutant Darren Grey scored a stunning opening try for the 2nds as they raced to another convincing win.
While it is clear that there is still a lot of work to be done in the next couple of weeks before entertaining Gala in the league opener on August 30, this was an encouraging start for Biggar.
This weekend they will face another tough test as Cambuslang visit Hartree Mill. Kick-off is at 3pm, but the game is just part of a planned Open Day. The ‘Open to All’ theme is being widely promoted and, with leaflets posted around Biggar and the immediate catchment area, the club hope there will be a large attendance on Saturday.
Demonstrations from the mini section at 1pm, midis at 2pm and the girls’ section at 4.30pm are just some of the attractions on offer.
There will also be ‘come and try’ areas with the cricket and athletics clubs, and a wide range of snacks and hot and cold drinks, music from the West Linton Pipe Band, golf pitch-and-putt, face-painting, bucking bronco and tombola.
A jogging club will start at Hartree Mill on Monday, August 25, with a meeting at 7.30pm for anyone interested..
