BIGGAR Rugby Club won the Walkerburn Sevens tournament on Saturday.
Billy Scanlon joined Lewis McLachlan and Alan Warnock in the scrum, Iain Renwick, Sam Muir, Michael and Chris McKeand made up the backs, while Conor Lavery, Ally Walker and Derek Brown were on the bench.
Biggar kicked off their first tie against Edinburgh Accies and racked up a 17-0 half-time score with tries from Chris McKeand, Scanlon and Muir, with Chris adding a conversion.
Warnock, Renwick and Michael McKeand added tries in the second half, with Chris converting two of them, for a final 36-0 score.
Biggar then faced favourites and reigning champions Hawick and started well with tries from Scanlon and Muir only to go in at half-time level at 12-12.
Hawick went ahead but were pegged back by Renwick before Michael McKeand’s late try gave Biggar a 24-17 win.
sPeebles were next in the semi-finals and both McKeand brothers quickly put Biggar into a 12-0 lead.
Peebles replied with an unconverted try but Chris scored his second try of the day for a 19-5 interval lead.
Warnock added another try in the second half before Michael McKeand was forced off with injury, to be replaced by Lavery.
Chris McKeand rounded off his hat-trick for a final 31-5 score.
Biggar met Selkirk in the final and, after some deliberation, Michael McKeand took his place and scored the opening try, which was followed by Warnock, with both converted by Chris McKeand.
Selkirk came back, but were 14-12 behind at the interval.
Tries by Renwick and Muir extended Biggar’s lead to 24-12, but an unconverted score from Selkirk clawed it back to 24-17.
However, Michael McKeand made the game safe with a late try for a 31-17 win.
Sam Muir was Player of the Tournament.
This Saturday Biggar travel to New Anniesland to take part in the annual Glasgow Sevens tournament.
