Spirited Strathaven's fightback fails

RELEGATION-HAUNTED Strathaven lost this Scottish Hydro-Electric West League Division Two Pool Two match despite a spirited fightback.

The hosts led 5-0 at the interval thanks to an unconverted try by David Nicol.

Early in the second half, Braidholm looked to have secured the win when they crossed the line again through Geoff Warnock, with Brett Burley converting.

However, Strathaven showed their character by battling back to cause their opponents some worrying moments.

Mark Hall crossed the line, and he was followed by Murray McAlpine.

Unfortunately for Strathaven, Leonard Allan was unsuccessful with both conversion attempts, kicking into a strong wind, and Braidholm ran out 12-10 winners.

Strathaven captain Robbie McKinlay said: “We were very unlucky to lose. Near the end, we were close to crossing the line for a third try but we just ran out of time.

“But there were lots of promising aspects. One of them was the performance of Ewan Stuart who is only 16, but didn’t look out of place with an outstanding display.

“We have three games left and if we play as well as we did on Saturday we should get the two wins that will keep us in the division.”

This Saturday Strathaven are away to McLaren FP (3pm kick-off). A bus will leave the club at 1pm.
