Veteran Hamilton Harriers athlete Andy McLinden in medal triumph

BOTHWELL athlete Andy McLinden powered his way to the top of the British veterans’ over-60 age-group half-marathon and 10k rankings following a super display in France.

Postman Andy (60), took second place in the half-marathon at the European Masters Championships in Thionville on May 15, in an excellent time of 1hr 20mins, which also helped the British team take bronze.

That was added to an excellent run on Friday, May 13, when Andy was sixth in the 10k in a time of 36mins 55secs, was first Brit home in his age group.

Hamilton Harriers runner and secretary Andy said: “I’ve taken part in several events over the years and had run for Scotland in the Five Nations Open Countries events, but had put off taking part in European and Worlds events until I turned 60, so that was the first time for me.

“Now that I’ve ‘got my bus pass’ I decided I had nothing to lose so gave it a shot and really enjoyed it against what was a strong field, and in quite competitive races.

“I was pleased with my performances and might try the World event next year.”

Andy’s performances put him at the top of the UK Athletics Power of 10 leaderboard in his age group and although he recognises that result could change “next week” he’s thrilled in the meantime.

Andy said: “It’s quite good and keeps the club’s name right up there. I know the leaderboard could change next week with results elsewhere, but I’m going to enjoy it for the time being.

“It’s something for the young ones to look up to and shows them what can be achieved if they work hard.

“I’m a coach for Hamilton Harriers at Bothwell Castle Policies in Uddingston and a level two coach with British Athletics, so it’s good to be able to lead by example.”

Andy has set his sights on the British Masters 10-mile Championships at Hexham in September, and the British and Irish Masters Cross Country International at Bellahouston Park on November 26.
