Tom Scott Road Race continues thanks to sponsorship

THE historic Tom Scott Road Race will take place next month after two major companies stepped in to back the popular event.

Sponsorship from Tunnock’s of Uddingston and the Co-op Funeralcare means that the event, organised by Law and District Amateur Athletics Club, will take place at Strathclyde Park in Motherwell on Sunday, April 11.

Runners of all abilities are invited to take part.

The main race, the 48th Tom Scott Memorial 10-mile Open Road Race, is run to perpetuate the memory of a fine marathon runner from Law Village.

Tom was an Olympic contender and often competed in major races throughout Great Britain. He could be seen most days running to and from his workplace in Motherwell.

Tragically, Tom was killed in a motoring accident on his way to an athletics event in England.

The ‘Tom Scott’ is one of the major 10-mile road races in Scotland and attracts entries from across the country.

It’s included in the Stewart’s Grand Prix Series of Road Races and both the Scottish Veteran Harriers and West District Road Racing Committee will hold their closed 10-mile championship events within the main race.

A 6k ‘Round the Loch’ challenge is also available.

Both courses are on almost traffic-free routes and a fast, flat, winding track around Strathclyde Park is perfect for setting fast times.

Numerous trophies are to be won and there’s a large prize list amounting to almost £1300.

Registration and declarations for both races will take place at the Watersports Centre from 9.30am-10.30am.

Changing facilities and showers are available and included in the entry fee.

Catering and free car parking will also be available at the Watersports Centre.

Minimum age for the 10-mile race is 17 on the day of the race, and 15 for the 6k.

Entry forms can be downloaded from www.tomscottroadraces.co.uk and further information is available by sending a SAE to Race Secretary, 42 Barmore Avenue, Carluke, ML8 4PE or by calling 01555 770358.
