HAMILTON Accies Girls remained at the top of the Under-17 League by seeing off their nearest rivals with a 3-0 win that puts them three points clear with the same number of games remaining.

Accies could have scored more but were denied by some fantastic goalkeeping, and by the woodwork.

However, East Kilbride also looked dangerous on the counter-attack and Accies survived some scary moments of slack defending.

The hosts had a deserved 2-0 lead at half-time thanks to a well-drilled low effort from McAvoy and a stunning left-foot goal from Macpherson.

While a more scrappy affair in the second half, the victory was sealed when a fantastic cross by McLachlan caught the EK defence wrong-footed and found its way into the net.

Manager/coach Jim Erwin said: “This was a big result in terms of the league, but it was more important that we matched the opposition off the ball, which we failed to do at Kilmarnock.

“I have got to be pleased with the football we played in spells, with some fantastic, swift passing and movement, which added the fluidity to our play that I have been looking for.”

On Sunday, September 6, the Under-17s also clocked up an impressive 9-1 win over Kilwinning.

Accies took the lead and were pegged back, but ran out comfortable winners with goals from McCleery (3), McLachlan (3), McAvoy, Goodwin and an own-goal.

Erwin commented: “The girls gave a good reaction from the disappointment of losing the 100 per cent. record last week.

“In spells we played some excellent, fast, free-flowing football, and this will be key to our remaining four fixtures to stay top of the league.”
