HAMILTON striker David Winters says Saturday’s win over Dundee was a massive achievement ... but insists they won’t get carried away.
The result put Hamilton four points clear of Dundee at the top of the Irn-Bru First Division after nine games.
But Winters, who set up Mark McLaughlin’s opener in the 2-0 New Douglas Park win, pointed out that there is a long way to go before Accies can talk about promotion.
He said: “Last week at St Johnstone, they ran over the top of us in the second half and I think we ran out of ideas.
“But we’ve managed to pick ourselves up again and this was a massive game for us.
“If we had lost, Dundee would have gone above us in the table.
“If that had happened we might have lost our momentum and the confidence might have dropped but we came right out of the traps, got about them and got our win.”
He added: “However, I don’t know if that proves our title credentials. It’s a long, hard season and all we can do is keep winning games, keep our home form on top, and try to take things away from home.
“We’ve got Dunfermline next at East End Park, which will be a hard place to go, but we just need to try and take points from the game.”
Winters continued: “This is only the first quarter, we’re only four points in front, and anything can happen.
“There are a lot of good teams out there that will gather a wee run, like St Johnstone and Livingston, and we just need to keep going.
“We’ve got a wee break this weekend so we’ll get the boys freshened up and go for the next quarter and hopefully we can maybe do the same.”
Lanarkshire lad David (25), knew Saturday’s tussle against the Tayside club was going to be difficult and was just pleased to have played his part.
He said: “It was a scrappy game with a lot of battling but I worked hard and managed to create something out of nothing with seven minutes to go and Marko scored.
“While they were challenging to try to make it 1-1, we broke away and Paul McLeod’s goal finished the game.
“At half-time, we knew we were in a difficult game because Dundee came and sat in and I think they would have been happy with a point.
“We were always gunning for three points, because winning your home games is the most important thing in this league.
“Our home record speaks for itself — we only lost twice in the league at home last year and one of those was on the last day of the season.
“People say we ONLY win on our pitch but I think that’s just an excuse.
“It’s just a game of football at the end of the day and our away record speaks for itself.
“Up until last Saturday, we had won three out of three and hadn’t conceded a goal so that just shows that we’re adaptable.”
