DELIGHTED David Winters sealed a return move to Hamilton on Friday and insisted he didn’t want to leave in the first place.
After turning down a contract extension last season, Winters (25), tried his luck elsewhere before boss Billy Reid invited him back in for talks last week.
The striker, who played a major part in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Queen of the South, is just delighted to be back at a club that he feels can be title challengers.
He said: “I knew from the start that Billy was going to bring in new faces, but I’ve liked it here the whole time and I didn’t really want to leave.
“The fans warmed to me towards the end of last season and I warmed to them as well.
“But Billy came in and offered me a deal that’s a wee bit better than he originally did, I’ve taken it, and hopefully we’re going to challenge for the title.
“I think we’ve got a good chance this season because all of the younger boys are a year older and the gaffer’s brought in new faces like Teggs (Neil Teggart) and Stan (Stuart Taylor), who have a bit of experience.
“Our home record last season spoke for itself so if we can keep that going and maybe improve our away form a bit, there’s no reason why we can’t challenge — especially when teams are taking points off each other.”
Winters now can’t wait to get his career off the ground again and said: “The fans gave me a brilliant reception when I came off on Saturday — and that just made me want to play the next game the next day!
“I’m just buzzing to get match-fit, and it will take me a few games to get back into the swing of it, but hopefully I can do that as soon as possible.
“I’m looking to get back on the scoresheet as soon as I can — I’ve missed the thrill of scoring in front of fans, and I’m just excited to be in amongst it again.
“I want to get match-fit, sharp, and show the fans what I can do.”
