Scoring against my old club left me feeling great

BRIAN Wake this week spoke of his delight at scoring against Gretna ... just months after being dumped by the Raydale Park club.

The towering Hamilton striker bagged his first goal of the season in Saturday’s 3-1 New Douglas Park win over Rowan Alexander’s men — and made sure his old gaffer knew all about it!

Wake was disappointed at what he sees as “a lack of professionalism” shown by the Gretna, when they offered him a two-year deal and then withdrew it.

But the 24-year-old was rescued by Hamilton and now he just wants to repay the faith boss Billy Reid showed in him.

Wake said: “I want to score in every game I play in, but it was nice to get a goal against Gretna.

“I was offered a two-year deal by them and it was then taken back off the table.

“I thought they could have been a bit more professional but that’s gone now.

“I want to forget about it and do the best job I can for Hamilton.

“I’ve been given a good chance here and the manager’s been great with me.

“I just want to do my best to repay the club and do my best for the team.”

Wake admitted it was a relief to score on Saturday and hopes there will be many more goals to come.

He said: “I scored with my first or second touch, and it was nice. It settled me down but it’s not just about who scored; it’s about the way we won the game.

“The gaffer, Billy Reid, just said to get on there, work hard and try to get hold of the ball.

“So to nick a goal was great; it settled us down a bit more, and we could see the game out after that.”

He added: “I thought we played superbly on Saturday. The lads really dug in, worked their socks off and that result just shows how far we’ve come.

“We’re second in the table, the lads are confident, and we just want to take it from here amd see how far we can go.

“Hopefully we can believe more now, take it on, and see if we can challenge.”

Wake expects a tough test against Clyde at Broadwood.

He said: “Every game in this league is hard. It doesn’t matter where you go, you’re in for a difficult 90 minutes.

“Hopefully we can go there and get another result, keep striving to finish as high as we can in the league.

“But the First Division is crazy because every team is capable of beating each other.

“It all depends on how you play on the day and I think if you can be consistent in this league, you’ll stand yourself in good stead.”
