Biggar Colts Win Dalziel Youth Rugby Club Festival

BIGGAR Colts last weekend won the Dalziel Youth Rugby Club Festival.

Drawn against Currie in their first game, Biggar were quickest off the mark to record an early try and won 5-0.

Ayr were next up but in a tight game neither side could find a winner, and it finished 0-0.

Greenock were the third opponents but they were no match for Biggar, who proved to be convincing winners.

This led to a final against host side Dalziel, and in a very tough game Biggar managed to maintain their unbeaten record as well as keeping a clean sheet.

Two scores eventually proved to be enough and Biggar collected the trophy.

The second of three major tournaments saw Biggar Minis travel to Currie for what is always a keenly-contested competition.

Joining the usual P4-7 groups were the boys from the New Image section, who were delighted to find that the games were full-contact, instead of the touch rules they normally follow.

Pitched against hosts Currie, Biggar got the win courtesy of the odd try in 15 in a real end-to-end game.

A second high-scoring game ensued, with Biggar beating a second Currie side 5-4.

Madras proved a tougher nut to crack, and they ran out 8-5 winners, but Biggar progressed to the semi-finals.

Watsonians also proved too strong for the tiring Biggar boys, winning 10-5.

The P4 side enjoyed a good day of rugby but after an excellent 7-1 win over Watsonians, a 3-3 draw against Madrascals and a 7-1 defeat by Edinburgh Accies meant they didn’t progress from their pool.

At P6 level, Biggar faced Currie in the first game, but lost 5-0, and then drew 2-2 against Madrascals before going down 3-1 to Edinburgh Accies.

The P7s enjoyed a 10-0 win over Currie but lost 5-1 to Stewart’s Melville and drew 3-3 with Boroughmuir before beating Perthshire 5-0.

Their last game was against Madras, with Biggar needing a big win to keep them in the hunt but their 4-1 triumph wasn’t enough and Stewart’s Melville won the tournament.

Second place is decided by tries scored, with Biggar sneaking ahead of Boroughmuir.

The P4-7s all travel to Meggetland on Sunday to participate in the Boroughmuir Tournament.

Kick-off has been confirmed as 10.45am, meaning everyone should be at Boroughmuir no later than 10.15am.

Those leaving from the Biggar clubhouse will do so at 9am.

Biggar’s Under-15s took part in the Livingston Sevens Tournament, giving a good account of themselves.

Biggar lost their first game to Currie by 27-12, with tries by Chris Mulligan and Ross Pankhe and a conversion from Malcolm Craig.

Boroughmuir then ran out 25-5 winners, with Andrew Gibson grabbing Biggar’s consolation score.

Biggar won their final match 21-7 against hosts Livingston.
