Handing over our freedom

“BRITISH jobs for British workers” is one of those silly soundbites so beloved of New Labour that sound good at the time but are really so vacuous that they disappear quickly from memory. This particular soundbite, however, has come back to haunt Gordon Brown.

The current industrial unrest at Total and elsewhere does highlight a huge issue often ignored by the electorate and one that politicians would rather not discuss. Our UK-based MPs and Edinburgh-based MSPs are powerless to do anything about the situation.

EU law rules and overrides any Scottish or UK laws. Some might ask when this came about. They should look at each successive EU treaty that the UK has signed up to and consider how sovereignty has increasingly dripped away to the EU.

The United States of Europe is on the way, whether we want it or not. Free Scotland argue that the lack of democracy within EU structures is reason enough to withdraw from the EU.

The SNP and the Liberal Democrats, the most ardent supporters of the EU, should explain why they want to be ruled by the unelected, undemocratic EU Commissioner.

Brian Nugent, Free Scotland Party.
