Blazing mad that bonfire was allowed

I AM writing in reply to the article in last week’s Advertiser about the fire crew attacked by bonfire thugs.

I felt sick to think that young people attack our emergency crews while they are doing their job. These young people or members of their family may need help from these same emergency crews soon or at some time in the future.

Regarding the bonfire between Wellcroft Road and St Ninian’s Road, the police sat in a marked minibus for around 20 minutes or more and watched as around 10 youths of average age took wood past the bus several times.

The youths then went ahead and lit the bonfire while the police sat in their minibus and watched. The police then drove away. At that time the youths started throwing fireworks at each other. Why didn’t the police stop this before it got started?

At no time did I see a fire crew attend the bonfire and put it out. It was still cindering at around 8.30 the next morning

I WOULD like to thank the Advertiser for publishing my letter a couple of weeks ago in which I said South Lanarkshire Council were right to sack staff caught sending smutty e-mails, and for publishing a reply to it from Unison rep Stephen Smellie. Read
